Once upon a time, 1000 years ago, all the Viking citizens of Crowsfjiord in Norway were sent a strange message. “Travel to the edge of the dark forest. There you will find a gateway and a guide who will tell you what to do next”

When the Vikings passed through the gateway – and there were many gateways because so many citizens had followed the mysterious instruction – they had a huge surprise. They found themselves in a forest containing trees like they’d never seen before with sparse grey-looking leaves. In the distance were trees similar to the firs of Norway. The guides who met them were also strange, with short hair, and wearing clothing in which a Viking of Norway would freeze to death! No furs or armour or long cloaks!

What had happened? They had travelled through time and space and arrived in the 21^st Century at Mount Crawford Forest. How could they return to their Viking homeland and their own time? What wealth and booty could they acquire in this unusual raid into which they had been thrown? The guides explained:

“You and your Viking group (and there are many groups) have to go on a journey. You will then camp overnight, cook some simple food and then journey some more. On your way you must accomplish some feats of cunning, skill and adventure. As a reward for doing this you will gain some Danegeld (coins) and some souvenirs of the 21^st Century to buy your way back through the time portal. You may even collect some Viking artefacts that your ancestors hid on a previous time travel adventure and be able to return them to your homeland at Crowsfjiord.”

They were told they could only take with them what they could carry comfortably, and they were given a map and told in which direction they should travel and that there would be places where they might gain wealth and brief rest.
